OggConvert is the conversion software of various audio and video formats to open formats:

  • Ogg Vorbis (ogg) is a free, open container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The creators of the Ogg format state that it is unrestricted by software patents and is designed to provide for efficient streaming and manipulation of high quality digital multimedia,
  • Matroska (mkv), is an open standard free container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file.[1] It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar in concept to other containers like AVI, MP4, or Advanced Systems Format (ASF), but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software,
  • webM (webm) is an audio-video container format designed to provide royalty-free, open video compression for use with HTML5 video. The WebM Project releases WebM-related software under a BSD license and all users are granted a worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free patent license. The project is sponsored by Google Inc,
  • Dirac is an open and royalty-free video compression format, specification and system developed by BBC Research at the BBC. Schrödinger and dirac-research (formerly just called 'Dirac') are open and royalty-free software implementations (video codecs) of Dirac. Dirac format aims to provide high-quality video compression for Ultra HDTV and beyond, and as such competes with existing formats such as H.264 and VC-1.

OggConvert is default installed and is in HandyLinux : HandyMenu > Raiders > Applications List > Multimedia > OggConvert.


OggConvert use is simple:

  • an audio or video file whatever format is selected as Source,
  • we choose what quality and what format to encode (ogg, or webm mkv),
  • the destination folder is selected,
  • the file is converted.

Selecting the audio file

Once you have clicked Source, the selection window appears, look for your audio file and click Open:

Once the file is selected, it appears in Source:

Now the output format is selected, ie in what format will be converted to the file Source. You can also adjust the quality, values ​​from 0 to 10 correspond to lift the quality scale compression Vorbis and Theora, a good compromise quality/size would be q5 value, but even at q2 we are left with file totally usable :

To choose the destination simply click on Destination Folder to choose something different than your default directory (Home):


To convert the file Source to Destination Folder, click Convert bottom right: running : report :

Selecting video file

This happens in the same way as audio with a video file. Once you have clicked Source, the selection window appears, look for your video file and click Open:

Once the file's selected, it appears in Source, you can choose the compression codec (Video Format) and output format (Advanced > File Format):

Click Convert and the same thing happens as for audio file compression: in progress: report:
