Multimedia Applications

HandyLinux contains multimedia applications to see pictures or movies and to listen music :

  • VLC : video viewer (and more).
  • Shotwell : image viewer.
  • QuodLibet : music player.
  • RadioTray : listen radio stations directly on your system.FIXME
  • XfBurn : disk burner.
  • XfMixer : volume manager.


Coming from Videolan projet, VLC media player is a multitool free software. This is the swiss army knife for video (and audio) with a friendly interface.

The originality of VLC can be shorted as :

  • audio, video, TV, … VLC can handle so much files,
  • can read flows directly due to the integrated codecs.

We'll see essentially the Video fonction (VLC is the HandyLinux default video player).


Open HandyMenu, clic on “Multimedia” tab, then “Multimedia player” : here is the default interface 8-o

Operation and Configuration

To open a video : Clic on “Media” tab.
VLC is able to:

  • read a file on HD,
  • list and read all files from a folder,
  • launch a DVD,
  • open an incoming video flow.

Example: you downloaded a video file legally isn't it 8-)
To see it in VLC, clic on “Média”, “open a file” then select the folder and the file. See below :

For watching a DVD or video CD, put it in the reader and it will be automatically launched.

Shotwell is the default HandyLinux' image browser.
Shotwell lets you browse, import, modify and sort your pictures simply by date and to print them.
Clic on the “Pictures Viewer” button in Multimedia section of HandyMenu. Introduction window appears :

Then you are in the Shotwell interface :
Shotwell proposed options are simple and appears on rollover. Explicit menus and easy interface.


Quodlibet is the default HandyLinux Music player.

This is a good player that can handle your music collection as your convinience.


To open it just go to HandyMenu, “Multimedia” section, “Music player” button.

By default, Quodlibet automatically verifiesMusic” folder (HandyMenu then “Files” and “My Music”).
After launching it, the list of your songs is displayed in the main window.
In this example, we have access to the list and we are listening “AC-DC” Highway to Hell “Highway to Hell”.
QuodLibet has an activity icon in the notification area so you could close it, it plays again.

Operation and Configuration

  • Right clic on notification area icon leads to a contextual menu with basics options.
  • Others adjustments are through the QuodLibet Menu Bar. As an example, lost of plugins are available, here is a short presentation. The activation of various functions is via Music menu → plugins, simply check what you want to activate.

    Burning audio :
    Simple way to create audio CDs ! Select your songs and choose the ‘Burn CD‘ plugin.
    Sleeves Downloading :
    A plugin lets you download sleeves if you don't want to scan ! Once downloaded, sleeves will be stocked in the EP folder as cover.jpg (default name).
    Wikipedia Informations :
    You want to discover more about a song or singer ? Use « Search * in Wikipedia » and the browser will search for.


FIXME application&screenshots
Radio Tray is a lightweight application that permits you to listen online radios. It's weel integrated in the Dashboard.
In HandyLinux, you have pre-choosen radios covering lot of styles.


RT stays discrete in the bottom right of the Dashboard Icon is grey when stopped.

Left clic on the icon shows stations to listen to.

Operation and Configuration

Icon becomes blue when you select a radio.

Notification appears too, naming the active radio name or artist name and song title…

For others settings just right clic on icon : Add/Remove, Rename radios and Create groups.


  • Simply save datas, copy them, backup your HD on external device or burn datas on CD/DVD,
  • benefit of your music on your hi-fi by burning compatible audio format CD,
  • To spread Handylinux and create a bootable DVD, burn an ISO format image. More on ISO image, read Howto burn Debian.


Launch it by HandyMenu, “Multimedia” section, “Burn CD/DVD” button.
In up you browse folders and files to add. At first launch, in bottom you can select :

  • Burn image : for ISO files,
  • Clean disc : clean a RW support,
  • Data composition : save datas to be read elsewhere,
  • Audio composition: burn music to be read on hi-fi.

Burning a disc image

To spread HandyLinux or any other GNU/Linux distribution, take the ISO file and choose “Burn image”. The window appearing lets you manage where's the ISO, what burner to choose and others options.

Once ISO selected and CD/DVD in, clic on “Burn image”. Once achieved, the burner eject CD/DVD automatically.

Cleaning a disc

Insert RW disc in, open Xfburn and choose “Clean disc”.
Confirm the burner a way to clean (fast or known secure total) in the next window. Clic on “Clean”. Once achieved, the burner eject CD/DVD automatically :

Saving data

Datas Composition” mode can save what you want and what you want only.
In main window, clic on “Datas Composition”. Select folders and/or files to save and clic “Add”. Your selection is in the bottom :

Once your datas are ready to be burnt, clic on “Burn” right bottom. A confirmation window appears with burner selected and others options. Once configured, clic on “Burn composition” :

Once achieved, the burner eject CD/DVD automatically.

Make an Audio CD

To burn a compatible hi-fi disc, choose “Audio composition” in main window. As for datas composition, use the browser in up to select songs that will apper in bottom. Once complete, clic on “Launch” :

As for datas composition… confirmation and launch, then ejection of disc.
Go listen music on your hi-fi.


Volume settings in HandyLinux goes through XfMixer. Open it by clicking on the “sound” icon in the dashboard or with HandyMenu, “Multimedia” section, “Volume settings” button. At first launch, you must choose your soundcard in the dropdown menu, after set “controls” handled by XfMixer. Click on “Controls” left bottom of window :
Window appears to select in/out of XfMixer :
Now you can benefit of complete soundcard settings :

Encode and Convert

To extract and save your audio CD on your computer or to encode your audio/video files, HandyLinux includes asunder and oggconvert, two very simple tools easy to use.
If you want to add extra multimedia codecs or access new multimedia applications ? then just add deb-multimedia repository.
